catacombs and twilight zones

Here I am in Berlin. I am one of about 35 other American students staying in a little efficiency apartment with a little kitchen, and a little balcony, and a little TV. They all look the same, and the rest of the inhabitants of the buildings are families and locals. We go to the German university every morning, climbing onto the 8:11 train and then waiting at the stop for about 7 minutes for the X83 bus every morning.

So far, we all huddle in the corner tables of the massive lunch room at around noon after our German lesson. The cafeteria is two subway stops from the classrooms, where we sit together whispering our English to one another. Okay, let’s be real, shouting our English to one another. We are Americans, right? (Har har.)

I’m yearning to meet people that have lived here for a while, or cool locals. I’ve met a few but have yet to become better acquainted. It will come, I’m sure.

I’ve felt an amazingly stark and contrasting twist of emotions since I’ve been here and just traveling recently in general. But ultimately I am happy that I’m doing this. This coming weekend will be the first “real” weekend that I’m here and if it’s not amazing then something must be wrong with me.
